Jackie Evancho: "If something in my music career caused problems in my family, I would leave my career immediately"

She became famous after the contest America's Got Talent 2010. She was invited to sing at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, USA, during the Festival of the Holy Father. There, we came together with this artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After many difficulties crossing the checkpoints, we arrive at the Oval, the stage located in Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia. A sunny morning of September 27, artists who were preparing to sing in the Festival that would be assisted by the Pope, one by one across the stage to the soundcheck and prepare details.
Suddenly the place got full with Jackie's voice, this girl of 15 years old, a sophomore student, this platinum youngest artist who just in US sold one million copies of her album.
It was nearly 12 pm, and around the stage and surrounding areas, were already thousands of people waiting with excitement the evening event. We greet her after her rehearsal and she came with her father, Michael Evancho, and her younger sister, Rachel. The father escorted her and proudly introduced us: "Here is Jackie!". We realized that he were giving us his great treasure, but then, respectful, he turned and left us with her.
Jackie is still a normal fun girl and even a little shy. Yes, sure she has a talent that enjoys sharing with the public.
Who invited you to sing for the Pope?
I received the invitation of the World Meeting of Families. I do not know why they chose me, all I know that is an honor and I am very happy to be here.
When you started to sing, did you dream of singing to big personalities?
Everyone has that dream when begins to sing, but I never imagined it would come true. The idea of singing for the Pope not crossed my mind, and I thought it was something very difficult to achieve. But now it came true, I'm very excited!
Have you prayed today to prepare your performance tonight?
No, I have not yet done, but it's a great idea!
What memories do you keep of your beginnings, when you sang at home and discover your talent for singing?
Just remember that whenever I start singing in my house they telling me to shut up please, because I would not stop singing (laughs). But thanks to that my parents realized that I had a good voice and I think that's why they asked me if I wanted to participate in a talent show. That was the beginning.
Since that moment, how your parents encouraged your talent?
They have always supported me. They telling me the things I did well, and that was bad. They guided me, making sure I did not become a 'diva'.
What say your friends and your classmates about your talent?
They do not comment much because they know that when I'm at school or at home I want to be a normal girl.
Do you practice singing every day?
I practice three times per week, although lately I've begun to practice more.
One of the song that you will sing tonight is "Ave Maria". How do you feel when you sing this song?
In general, when I sing, many emotions cross my mind. I think I can fail, and I get nervous. But when I sing "Ave Maria" is different, I never feel that way. I'm always calm and I am sure that I will do it well.
You have a special feelin with the Virgin Mary when you sing?
I am Catholic and "Ave Maria" is a way of praying.
What is the next step on your career after tonight? You're still very young and you got to sing even for the Pope...
I just want to keep singing, growing in experience and become more famous (laughs).
How do you imagine in ten years? You will continue singing?
I will continue singing, which is what I do best, and will travel around the world, singing.
For a public career, a physical appearance it is often very important. What does beauty mean to you?
Do not think about it, I know that in showbiz is something important, but it should not be, because what matters in the end, after all, is the talent, not your appearance.
Is there anything you want to say to young people struggling, like you, to achieve their dreams?
Yes. I would tell them to achieve their dreams, fight tirelessly for them; people are going to say, again and again, that is not good enough, they will not get what they want, but that's only because they think they would not be able. They should ignore these comments and go ahead, follow the instinct.

How is your day by day?
On any given day, I wake up at six o'clock and go to school. Back home at 2:30pm, and then I stay in my room taking a nap. I do not do anything concrete until dinner.
Do you have any hobbies?
In my free time I like to draw, write poetry and read stories.
How many siblings you have?
I have three siblings: an older sister of 17 years old and a brother and a younger sister, of 13 and 11 years old.
How is your relationship with them?
We get along great, but of course we sometimes have disagreements, but we are a very close family.
What moments share between? Do you travel?
We share many moments, normal among kids of our age, but we do not often travel together. When we do is, however, amazing, a gift to be together.
Your mother will be here tonight to accompany you?
She is at home; could not come to Philadelphia.

Q&A with Jackie Evancho from Nashville Parent.com
The 15-year-old singing sensation joins the Nashville Symphony on Wednesday, June 17 for a night of classical and pop selections. Jackie Evancho’s life changed forever when she was 8 years old. Her parents took her to see Phantom of the Opera, and the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber musical became a pillar of inspiration. Blessed with a phenomenal voice — especially at such a young age — Evancho soon became a YouTube sensation attracting the likes of composers like David Foster.
Evancho’s following grew by leaps and bounds in 2010 when she was a 10-year-old contestant on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent, finishing the competition in second place.
Since then, she’s released four studio albums, a live CD/DVD (Dream with Me in Concert) and last year enjoyed her own PBS special, Awakening: Live in Concert. She’s sold more than 3 million albums so far, and her achievements are impressive. She’s the youngest Top-10 debut artist in U.S. history, and the youngest solo artist to go platinum in the United States. Add to that her recent big screen debut in Robert Redord’s The Company You Keep.
Not too shabby of a resume for the now 15-year-old young lady who shows no signs of letting success at a young age go to her head.
The Nashville audience gets to experience the classical crossover singer live in concert with the Nashville Symphony on Wednesday, June 17 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Evancho promises a wide range of material including classic arias to pop/rock favorites, show tunes and songs from the silver screen.
Nashville Parent caught up with Evancho for a phone interview recently to talk about her inspiration, life and her upcoming performance in Nashville.
What was it about Phantom of the Opera that inspired you so much when you were 8 years old?
I honestly believe that why I love Phantom so much is the passion and songs and the way the characters interact with each other. The love story really captured my attention … being a young girl and always hoping for love.
America’s Got Talent was a huge leap into starting your journey as a performer. What was it like being on the show when you were 10, and did it make you nervous to sing in front of millions of people?
I don’t think singing in front of millions of people is what made me nervous. What made me nervous was just singing in front of anyone in general, but I obviously grew to get used to that.
It was so much fun being on that TV show because it was like making a new family and having new friends. No one was jealous of each other or worried about each other. We were just great friends.
How do you overcome stage fright?
I usually get a bit nervous before I sing. It’s definitely easier to do since America’s Got Talent. It’s very fun to sing in front of people. I usually just say a prayer before I go on stage, warm up, drink a lot of water and tea, and that’s really it.
You have a lot of impressive achievements like being the youngest Top 10 debut artist in U.S. history and the youngest solo artist to have a platinum album. You’ve sold more than 3 million records, performed in front of the President of the United States and did a duet with Barbra Streisand. What does that kind of success do to you at a young age?
It doesn’t affect me as a person. It makes me a bit more proud of myself because I know that not just anybody can make those achievements. I’m not saying that I’m special, but I’m saying that I worked hard to get there and I’m proud of myself for it.
What music do you enjoy listening to?
I listen to everything, and usually the music I listen to depends on my mood. It can be a band like Royal Blood to classical pieces like “Moonlight Sonata.”
What’s a typical day like for you?
My average day consists of waking up at 6, going to school, coming home and having an occasional interview or conference call or maybe stopping into the recording studio, but it’s pretty normal compared to what I expected when I was younger.
How do you maintain a sense of normality? Do you have to pitch in and do chores with your brothers and sister?
My parents have been cracking down on the rules, so I can’t go anywhere unless I’ve done at least one thing around the house. That’s a little irritating! (laughs)
I didn’t expect to get any special treatment, and I’m really glad that I didn’t because I feel that if I had I might be a bit more full of myself. Although I don’t really think I’d fall victim to becoming a diva because of fame, I still worry that it might be out of my control.
Do you have any hobbies? What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?
I like to sew, and I like to draw and write books and songs — anything I can really think of. I play some piano (self-taught) and violin (mostly self taught). I love just socializing with my friends.
Nashville’s looking forward to seeing you perform with our award-winning Nashville Symphony on June 17. What can we expect in regard to your song selections?
It’s going to be a mix of songs from all of my albums except for the Christmas ones. I don’t think there’s a specific genre that I prefer to do more than another. I just like to sing the songs that I sing. I choose the songs I sing because they have a specific sound or quality to them that I just enjoy. I tend to steer clear of songs that I am even a little iffy about. I just prefer to love the songs that I sing.
Is there anything in particular you hope to see or experience while you’re in Nashville?
I’ve been to Nashville once a long, long time ago. Hopefully I can do some site seeing and shopping, because I LOVE shopping! I don’t know specifically what I want to look at because I know there’s so many things to see in Nashville, and I can hardly begin to imagine. I’m just looking forward to a fun experience in Nashville!

Nick Cannon Reveals His All-Time Favorite ‘America’s Got Talent’ Contestant, And The Answer Might Surprise You
From the extraordinary to the extreme, America’s Got Talent has hosted a whole range of performers since premiering on NBC in 2006.
In honor of the show’s upcoming 10th season, we asked host Nick Cannon to reveal his all-time favorite contestant from the competition series during a round of People’s Choice Against the Clock.Though Cannon has seen many big acts take the AGT stage, when it came time to pick a favorite he went small — 10-years-old to be exact. The host said opera singer Jackie Evancho, who was 10 when she appeared on the show in season five, stood out amongst the pack.
“She’s gone on to be the biggest star,” said Cannon of the pint-sized contestant during the NBC Upfronts in May.
Though Evancho actually went on to finish in second place, fans of America’s Got Talent will of course remember the young singer for her incredible renditions of opera songs like “O Mio Babbino Caro”.

IF THERE'S ANYTHING on Earth close to the sound of an angel, it must be the heavenly voice of Jackie Evancho, star of the fifth season of "America's Got Talent" and today, at age 15, one of the world's most adored vocalists.After wowing the whole world with classical crossover songs in 2010, when she was only 10, Evancho was immediately signed by Columbia Records where she released a string of successful recordings including "O Holy Night", "Dream With Me", "Heavenly Christmas", "Songs from the Silver Screens" and her most recent, "Awakening" in 2014.
Evancho has performed at the National Christmas Tree lighting concert in Washington, in front of US President Obama, stunned a 100,000-strong Russian audience by singing with opera stars Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo and has performed in Japan before the royal family at the Imperial Palace. Such achievements prompted Billboard to include her on the list of "music moves-and-shakers under the age of 21" in 2011 and 2012.
Evancho was in Bangkok recently to perform in Andrea Bocelli's concert alongside David Foster, Katharine McPhee and Maria Aleida. We had a chat with the minor superstar after the show.

The show was so much fun. And yes, I got to perform with one of my idols, Andrea Bocelli. We sang "Con Te Partiro" together, which is one of the songs that I sang on "America's Got Talent". The thing that kept going through my mind while I was singing with him was that I would mess up my Italian, which would have been very embarrassing. It was such a great experience, and after the show he said to me "great job", and that's a big deal coming from Andrea Bocelli. I think the show was great and all the artists were phenomenal.
HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE MUSIC SCENE NOW?
I know that I have something because that's what people tell me. I don't really feel that my voice is so out there because in my head I still sound like a little girl but everyone else says I sound like a 20-year-old or 40-year-old opera singer. It doesn't make sense to me! I started singing when I was eight years old. Before "America's Got Talent" it was mainly my mum and one sibling coming with me. We would just get in our car, drive all across the East Coast trying to be seen or get noticed. We just did little talent competitions here and there.
WHAT KINDS OF MUSIC DID YOU GROW UP LISTENING TO?
All sorts of music actually - whatever was on the radio or whatever my parents played. It could go from pop music to music that my dad listened to when he was younger, and I love all of it. I respect all music. But I was inspired to sing by the musical "The Phantom of the Opera". The music just clicked.
YOU'RE THE YOUNGEST TOP-10 DEBUT ARTIST IN US HISTORY AND THE YOUNGEST SOLO ARTIST EVER TO GO PLATINUM. HOW DOES THAT FEEL? DID SUCCESS COME TOO SOON FOR YOU?
It was a great honour. It was surreal actually. I still don't believe that it's real. My whole life I wanted to be a singer, so experiencing this is like a dream come true. Not a lot of people get to experience that so I'm really honoured that I'm one of the few people who can. And no, I don't think success came too soon for me. It came pretty slow and at a good, steady pace. I think my parents and the record label and the people that I work with did a great job of making sure it did not come too fast.
DO YOU GET RECOGNISED BY THE FANS A LOT?
A lot of people don't recognise me unless I'm wearing a dress. Most people saw me when I was a little girl on "America's Got Talent" and they don't realise that I'm growing up. The way I dress normally is so different from the way that people see me when I'm in public. I don't wear giant ball dresses all the time!
HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH SCHOOL?
I go to public school, so I will let the teachers know when I'm leaving and how long I'll be gone for, and they will give me the work ahead of time that I will have to finish and turn in. Most of the time it's worked out, but sometimes it doesn't! Keeping up with school is the most challenging, and the most important, thing I do because I plan to go to college and hopefully I will get a good education. It's difficult when you're gone a lot and the teachers do get irritated by it, but it's turning out pretty well so far. I would like to study psychology and philosophy. A lot of people ask if I want to study music, but I feel that I've mastered the music already - It's my job and my life.
WHY DOES PSYCHOLOGY INTEREST YOU?
I like reading people, and I like to figure out what they're thinking - it's very interesting. I also grew up with a lot of crime TV shows like "Law and Order", "Criminal Minds" because my mum is a great fan. I guess that's what inspired me.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE HUMANE SOCIETY TO SAVE SEALS.
When I was little I thought seals were the most adorable things ever. Then I found out that these cute animals are being attacked and hurt for no reason. So when I started to become known I decided to use that fame to try and help as much as I could, to stop that cruelty and boycott it. I've been working with the Humane Society as an ambassador to save these animals. It's a great honour for me.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?
I'll have a break for two months and probably go to a beach somewhere with my family. Then I'll have a tour to promote "Awakening" and some shows with David Foster. I think we'll be back in Asia again in August.

tenor Andrea Bocelli thrills the audience at the most expensive concert Bangkok
has ever staged.
World-class Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed his first concert in Thailand on Sunday night and for those who could afford the tickets, it was a night they will always remember.
After several unsuccessful attempts in the past by many concert organisers to bring him here, the organiser of the Fresh Air Festival finally beat the odds, staging a sold-out "Magical Night with Andrea Bocelli" at the Royal Paragon Hall.
That this would be no ordinary concert was underlined from the very start with the Royal Anthem performed live by an orchestra of some 50 musicians and Thai singer Kittinan Chinsamran, who is well known among "The Voice Thailand" fans.
The visually-impaired Bocelli, 57, was greeted with long and loud applause when he was led onto the stage by maestro Carlo Bernini, who conducted a 131-strong backup team of orchestra musicians and chorus singers from many Asian countries.
The audience fell immediately under his spell as his powerful voice flowed and ebbed on a string of arias by Verdi, Puccini and Gounod, as well as contemporary numbers written by such well-known composers as Grammy Award-winner David Foster and Italian Francesco Sartori.
Foster also joined the concert, playing the piano and joking with the audience. He was involved with most of the show in the second half of the concert, often providing the backing for "American Idol" winner Katharine McPhee, 14-year-old "America's Got Talent" winner Jackie Evancho, Cuban soprano Maria Aleida, "Thailand's Got Talent" winner Maneepatsorn "Myra" Molloy, and classical-pop cross-over guitar duo Carisma.
Myra sang Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's "Som Tum" while McPhee performed "Echo", a composition by His Majesty the King.

Tickets, priced at Bt12,000 and Bt25,000 each, were among the priciest for a concert in this country. And for those who could afford it, concert tickets with gala dinner were also available at Bt1 million and Bt1.5 million a table, working out to more than Bt100,000 for each person.
The encore was a highlight of the concert, with Bocelli waiting until he returned to stage to perform two of his best known songs "The Prayer" and "Time to Say Goodbye" (or "Con Te Partiro" in Italian), in duets with McPhee and Evancho respectively. He also sang "La Forza del Sorriso" ("The Power of a Smile"), the theme song for the 2015 World Expo in Milan, Italy.
Before that though, he performed "Nessun Dorma", from the final act of Puccini’s opera "Turandot" in a grand finale that won long applause and loud cheers.
